This heavy little box is highly detailed with imagery of ancient Egypt. The hinged lid opens to reveal three small oval compartments which are coated with a black flocked velvet-like material. It seems to be designed primarily to lie flat; it will also stand upright, but the back is not detailed, it is a flocked black velvet, and there is no catch mechanism on the lid.
The image of the scarab, conveying ideas of transformation, renewal, and resurrection, is ubiquitous in ancient Egyptian art. (some information adapted from Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia)
